Composition is the act of expressing ideas and feelings through written text. As an elementary school teacher, we are constantly hearing to integrate more. I believe that integration is a very important part of learning, however I agree with Ray that while writing needs to be integrated, we should also teach writer’s workshop as its own independent subject. In first grade, students complete the MClass assessment, which consists of the TRC. The TRC measures students reading fluency, accuracy, verbal retell, and written comprehension. In first grade, the written comprehension is often the hardest part of the TRC and students tend to need more practice in that area. Therefore, I’m guilty as well for focusing much of my writing time with the kids on writing for reading comprehension. Although, I teach writing composition separately and as its own subject, my students could benefit from the extra writing time that I incorporate into reading. While it’s hard to fit in everything we need to teach into a small amount of time, I agree with Ray that we need to “do writing” in order to become better writers.
